Fall 2026 Men’s Style: Easy Updates for Men Over 40

Men’s style doesn’t change nearly as quickly as women’s. That’s good news if you’re a man who hasn’t given much thought to updating your wardrobe lately.

You probably don’t need a closet overhaul.

But if you’ve been wearing the same business-casual formula for the last decade, or your everyday uniform has become an old T-shirt, worn jeans and the same pair of sneakers, a few changes can make a big difference.

And if you’re a woman reading this thinking, “My husband needs this,” send it his way. He may need fewer updates than you think.

Before We Talk Trends, Let’s Talk About the Clothes You Already Own

The first thing I’d do has nothing to do with Fall 2026 trends.

Look at the condition of your clothes.

A faded T-shirt that has lost its shape, jeans that have seen better days, a stretched-out sweatshirt or shoes that are simply worn out aren't going to look better because you add something trendy to the outfit.

Replace worn-out clothes. Period.

Then I’d look at three areas: your pants, your shoes and your outerwear.

Those are some of the easiest places to make an older wardrobe feel current without changing the way you dress completely.

1. Start With Your Jeans and Trousers

If there is one noticeable change in men's clothing right now, it’s the shape of the pants.

For years, men's pants became slimmer and slimmer. In Fall 2026, we're seeing more room through the thigh and leg, with straight and relaxed silhouettes becoming much more prominent. Current menswear coverage is showing higher rises, fuller thighs and cleaner, straighter legs, although both slimmer and much wider silhouettes are still part of the mix. (GQ)

For the average man, I wouldn't jump from very slim pants to something extremely wide.

Just give yourself a little more room.

And relaxed does not mean buying your pants too big. Your waistband should still fit. The pants should sit properly at your waist, and the length should look intentional. You're simply moving away from fabric that hugs your legs from hip to ankle.

The same applies to jeans. A great-fitting pair of jeans in a current wash and a straight or slightly more relaxed silhouette is one of the easiest wardrobe updates you can make. Relaxed and straight denim are both prominent for Fall 2026. (GQ)

If you're still wearing the same very slim jeans you bought years ago, this is where I'd start.

2. Upgrade the Shoes

Shoes are one of the first things I notice when I'm looking at an outfit.

You can be wearing good jeans and a nice sweater, but an outdated sneaker or older slip-on shoe can pull the whole outfit backward.

You don't need ten pairs of new shoes.

Start with an updated sneaker that works with your jeans and casual pants. Then, for fall and winter, consider adding a good boot. A Chelsea boot is an easy option because it works with jeans, chinos and casual trousers without feeling overly dressy.

Boots in general are a significant part of Fall 2026 menswear, so this is one trend that's also extremely practical. (GQ)

3. Buy a Better Jacket

This might be my favorite update for the man who doesn't want to think very hard about clothes.

You can still wear a T-shirt and jeans. Just occasionally replace the old hoodie or fleece with an actual jacket.

For Fall 2026, I particularly like a bomber jacket, barn-style jacket or suede jacket for a man who wants something current but easy to wear. Bombers and other substantial casual jackets are showing up strongly in current fall menswear, alongside perennial denim, leather and workwear-inspired outerwear. (GQ)

The jacket does most of the work for you.

Jeans + T-shirt + old sweatshirt can look like you didn't give the outfit much thought.

Jeans + T-shirt + great jacket looks intentional.

It's not complicated.

What About Color and Pattern?

The Fall/Winter 2026 menswear trend report has plenty of fashion-forward ideas: retro influences, animal prints, statement leather, patterns and some pretty bold styling.

You don't have to wear any of it.

If you're someone who enjoys fashion, go for it. But for the man who simply wants to look current and put together, I'd borrow the quieter ideas.

Try richer fall colors such as brown, burgundy and olive. Earthy browns and olives are being treated as increasingly versatile neutrals in 2026 menswear, while stronger color is appearing more broadly as well. (GQ)

A plaid shirt, striped sweater or subtle patterned knit is another easy way to add some interest without feeling like you're trying too hard. Plaid in particular is showing up prominently again this fall. (GQ)

You don't need the leopard-print cardigan unless you genuinely love the leopard-print cardigan.

Updating Business Casual After 40

This is another place where men can get stuck.

Maybe your formula has been slim chinos + button-down + quarter-zip + dress shoes for years.

There's nothing inherently wrong with those pieces. But if the entire outfit hasn't changed in a decade, it can start to look dated.

I'd update the pants first.

Choose a more current trouser shape that still works for your body and lifestyle. Then look at your shoes. Are they in good condition? Does the shape still look current?

Finally, consider the layer you're putting on top. You don't have to abandon the quarter-zip, but adding a better jacket gives you another option and can completely change the outfit.

That's really the point of all of this.

You Don't Need to Become a “Fashion Guy”

I think this is where a lot of men get hung up.

Looking current doesn't mean you suddenly have to follow fashion or wear things that don't feel like you.

Men's style moves slowly enough that plenty of what you already own probably still works. Your job is to figure out what isn't working anymore.

This week, start with three things:

Pants. Shoes. Jackets.

Pull out the ones you wear most often. Check the condition. Look at the fit. If something is worn out, replace it. If your pants are all very slim, try a straighter or slightly more relaxed fit. If your shoes are dating the outfit, start there. If every casual outfit ends with the same old sweatshirt, try a better jacket.

Then take a look through our Fall/Winter 2026 Men's Trend Report, linked HERE: https://hueandstripe.com/catalog/1860H-S36yuC9xw

Don't use it as a list of things you need to buy. Use it to see what current menswear looks like, then decide which one update would make the biggest difference in the wardrobe you already own.

You might be surprised how little it takes.
